WALT DISNEY STUDIOS GOLD ART CORNER CELS
WALT DISNEY STUDIOS GOLD ART CORNER CELS

Animation cels became a very popular item at Disneyland. They started in price somewhere around $1.50, which today seems a ridiculously low cost. While previously, cel collecting had been reserved for relatively few gallery visitors, at this low price, people throughout the world were now being introduced to the magic of cels and the joy of collecting them. Many thousands of cels were bought from the time the Art Corner opened in 1955 until it finally closed its doors in the early 1960s. After the closing of the Art Corner, cels were sometimes sold at the Emporium on Main Street, and in Tinker Bells Toy Shop in Fantasyland. Cels continued to sell actively during the 1950s and l960s, especially with the release of SLEEPING BEAUTY and 101 DALMATIANS.

Perhaps the most popular children's television series of all time, the original 'Mickey Mouse Club' aired on ABC from October 3, 1955, to September 25, 1959. Each show began with an animated segment of Donald Duck striking the Mickey Mouse Club gong (and something unusual always happened when Donald hit the gong!), and each show ended with Mousekartoon Time.

In the l960s, Goofy was frequently cast in suburban settings as the 'common man,' occasionally with a wife and son, to showcase some of the pitfalls of modern living. In this unusual guise, he was often known as Mr. George Geef, and even shed his distinctive voice for some of these roles. This mature role for Goofy utilized his skills as an actor, rather than playing upon his traditional persona.

One Hundred and One Dalmatians was based on the book The Hundred and One Dalmatians by British author Dodie Smith. The contemporary tale was obviously a breath of fresh air for the Disney team after six years in the fairy tale world of Sleeping Beauty (1959). 101 Dalmatians is a distinct departure in both story and style. 'Cartoonish' exaggerations of reality were the standard for 101 Dalmatians, instead of the duplication of reality required in Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty.

#DG21 - Walt Disney 'Sword in The Stone', 1963. This Art Corner cel of 'Merlin' measures 8.00' X 9.50', bearing offical Gold Art Corner Seal on rear.

The visual style of The Sword in the Stone is oddly hybrid, since the new Xerox(tm) technology pioneered in 101 Dalmatians dictated a rugged, graphic style; and the story was a medieval tapestry more in keeping with the visual style of Sleeping Beauty (1959). The Disney artists made up for this conflict in styles with exceptionally well-developed characters in entertaining and imaginative sequences.

Many animation experts cite the battle between the wizard Merlin and his rival, Mad Madam Mim, as a highlight of not only the film, but of character animation to that date. The characters of Merlin and Mim go through a dozen transformations of their physical beings during the raucous magic duel, but maintain the definition of their characters throughout the melee.

#DG20 - Walt Disney 'Sword in The Stone', 1963. This Art Corner cel of 'Wart and Arcamedes' measures 8.00' X 9.50', bearing offical Gold Art Corner Seal on rear.

To follow the tremendous success of 101 Dalmatians (1961), Walt Disney selected another modem British classic, The Sword in the Stone. He had acquired the rights to T.H. White's novel about the boyhood and education of King Arthur in 1939 (the year after the book's publication). Disney hesitated to develop the film as an animated feature then, feeling that it was not well known enough to warrant it. In the early 1950's, the novel was again considered for production, and when the smash Broadway musical Camelot opened in 1960 (based on White's complete cycle of novels about Arthur, The Once and Future King), Walt began development in earnest.

Walt Disney's '101 Dalmatians' in 1961 was the first feature to solely use Xerox process for transferring the animators' drawings to cels. It was a spectacularly satisfying film that introduced audiences to a new style of animation that Disney adopted. Edges were more clear-cut, colors more vibrant, and backgrounds were intentionally made to look drawn rather than real.

Animation Art Cels and Drawings by Walt Disney, Dr. Suess, Tex Avery, Chuck Jones, Jay Ward, Charles Addams, Bob Clampett,Ward Kimbel,Milt Kahl,Frank Thomas,

Walter Elias Disney, along with his brother Roy O, began the Walt Disney Studios to produce and created cartoon shorts featuring characters of the Disney Studios.

The Disney Studios produced and created the first ever fully animated feature, 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs'. Other firsts in the film world were, the first synchronized sound cartoon, the first use of the storyboard, the first full color cartoon, the first stereophonic theater installations with Fantasound, the first CinemaScope cartoon, the first use of the Xerox process to assist in the animation process, and the first 3D cartoon. Disney also developed the Multiplan Camera, first used in 'The Old Mill'.

THE ART CORNER AT DISNEYLAND

After the Courvoisier Gallery went out of business in 1948, the cel craze in the galleries almost died out. The fascination for cels was now reserved primarily for the studio collectors and aficionados. The history of cel collecting was forever changed with the opening of Disneyland in July of 1955. 'Disneys Folly' was an overnight sensation! People flocked from all over the world to see Disneyland, and cel collecting was reborn in a little store that primarily sold animation cels. It was called simply, the Art Corner.
