Jamie spent 22 years as a professional scrimshaw artist. (Scrimshaw, an indigenous North American Folk art, is the intricate craft of carving and engraving fossilized ivory and bone.) During his career, Jamie won numerous national and international designing awards, including hundreds of trophies and blue ribbons. In 1982, his last year of traveling to national, juried arts and craft fairs, Jamie participated in 30 shows and took home 30 First Place awards.
Jamie is hopelessly color-blind. The 'hair' of his characters represent color-blind tests, and the 'shells' on their cheeks are actually ammonites-fossilized seashells.

#11 Jamie Hayes, 1996. The art measures 16.00' X 6.50', rendered in multi-color ink. This is an artist proof number 8 of 25.
Jamies artistic background is in the art of scrimshaw, an indigenous North American folk art. An interesting note, the hair on his characters are made up of small colorful circles, which represent color-blindness tests. Purchased in Boston, MA.
The drawing was too large for a full scan......too bad.
The original art was commissioned by Robin Williams.
