Animation Loses Legend 7/8/02

Legendary Disney artist, animator, designer and filmmaker Ward Kimball passed away at the age of 88.

Ward Kimball, one of Walt Disney's legendary 'Nine Old Men', was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on March 4, 1914. At the young age of 20, Ward joined the Walt Disney Studios and spent the next 38 years drawing, animating and directing for Disney.

Some of the most memorable characters that Ward brought to life include Jiminy Cricket in 'Pinocchio', Tweedledee and Tweedledum in 'Alice in Wonderland' and Lucifer in 'Cinderella'. During his career, Ward directed two Academy Award winning short subject films, directed films for television and a live-action musical. Ward Kimball retired from Disney in 1972.

A fan of jazz and trains, Ward started the Dixieland jazz band 'Firehouse Five plus Two' and operates a full size locomotive on his ranch - Grizzly Flats.

In 1989, Ward Kimball was named a Disney Legend.

Emerging from school in the depths of the Depression, the young artist found work in the fledgling animation industry, working in succession with Ub Iwerks (Walt Disney's original partner), Charles Mintz and Walter Lantz (creator of Woody Woodpecker). He advanced from washing cels to in-betweening, finally landing a job at Leon Schlesinger Productions, the supplier of cartoons to Warner Bothers. Chuck Jones was to continue this association for the next 30 years. In this company he worked for the great animation directors Friz Freleng, Frank Tashlin and Tex Avery, men he credits with teaching him the comic timing, vivid characterization and jubilant anarchy for which Warner Bothers cartoons were famous.
