This cel is hand inked in a subtle blue on a 16-field cel. Caspers ghostliness was created by cutting a custom mask for each cel and applying the special translucent paint by airbrush. The painstaking, labor intensive technique was especially created for Casper and never used again.

Wendy the Good Little Witch was clearly inspired by Casper the Friendly Ghost, also published by Harvey Comics, which did both as part of a minor genre of kid-friendly versions of supernatural bugaboos.

Spooky originally appeared in the Casper animated cartoons for Famous Paramount Studios. His character then was basically the same as now. Spooky gets into mischief scaring people and animals, while Casper tries to deter him. This of course, makes him want to spook even more. He also appeared in the later 'New Casper Cartoon Show' with Casper and Wendy. His first appearance in comics was in 'Casper, the Friendly Ghost' #10, in 1953.

A derby, a coal-like nose, a freckled face, and the loudest 'Boo' in spookdom are the trademarks of this pint-sized funny scoundrel. The spirit with spirit, Casper's cousin Spooky is a mischievous menace who prides himself on his toughness and his ability to scare the living daylights out of anything from a mouse to a mountain.

The 'Casper' cartoon was directed by Isadore Sparber and released by Paramount's Famous Studios, as part of its 'Noveltoons' series, in 1945.
This sentimental tale of a ghost who didn't want to scare anyone was well enough received to spark a sequel, There's Good Boos Tonight (1948), also directed by Sparber.

Wendy first appeared in the back pages of Casper's comic, debuting in the 20th issue (May, 1954). She not only held down a back-up series of her own, but also functioned as a playmate for Casper, who lacked relationships in the mortal realm.
